Ohne Subventionen kann der Stierkampf nicht bestehen, diese Subventionen kommen nicht nur aus Spanien, sondern auch von der Europäischen Union. Sonderprämien für männliche Rinder, die eigentlich als Ausgleichzahlungen für den gesunken Marktpreis von Rindern gedacht waren, können auch von Kampfstierzüchtern beantragt werden. Laut einer dänischen Zeitung unterstützt die EU den Stiermord so mit 8,2 Millionen Euro jährlich.

Dear Mr Cioloş

I am disgusted that European taxpayers’ money is being used to subsidise the breeding of bulls for bullfighting. Correspondence with the European Commission has confirmed that any farmer who exercises an agricultural activity, including bull-breeding, can apply for a single payment from the European Union through the Common Agricultural Policy. The eventual destination of the animal for bullfighting is not a condition for exclusion from that payment.

Bullfighting is illegal in Germany and in many other countries across Europe. So why is our tax money being diverted to support this horrific industry?

During a bullfight, the bull is attacked with lances and harpoons by men on foot and on horseback. The matador forces the confused and exhausted animal to make a few charges and eventually attempts to kill it with a sword. If not killed, the animal is stabbed repeatedly until paralysed. When the bull finally collapses, the spinal cord is cut, but the animal may still be conscious as his ears and tail are cut off and kept as a trophy. This horrific torture is performed entirely for the purposes of human entertainment in the name of ‘sport’ and this is completely unacceptable in a civilised society.

It is wholly unacceptable that our tax money is funding these horrific practices and I urge you to use your authority to end our association with this industry.

Es widert mich an, dass europäische Steuergelder dazu genutzt werden Stiere für Stierkämpfe zu züchten. Die europäische Komission hat bestätigt, dass Landwirte, einschließlich derer die in der Stierzucht aktiv sind, einen einmaligen Zuschuss aus der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik der Europäischen Union erhalten können.
